The Local Old Fashioned
This is a simple twist on a classic cocktail I did for the International Whisky Night in December, 2019.
Last Mountain Distillery in Lumsden, SK makes a fantastic Rye Whisky, with a slightly spicy and smokey finish with just enough bite to make you crave another sip. Perfect for straight up, rocks, or a whisky-forward cocktail.
To start off, I used prairie cherries from Over The Hill Orchards with equal parts sugar and water to make a tart and sweet simple syrup. Or course I kept the cooked cherries for garnish (and used a few for a baked brie appy).
For bitters, I used some from my personal stock of creations (hopefully launching those in 2020). This one had the Oaked Orange bitters which amped up the barrel aged flavor and kicked up the citrus.
Recipe:
1.5oz LMD Rye Whisky
.5oz Prairie Cherry Simple Syrup
3-5 drops bitters
Orange Zest
Muddle the bitters and syrup with the orange zest in a mixing glass, add the whisky and ice, stir to dilute and chill. Strain over fresh ice (ice sphere if available) and garnish with a prairie cherry and another zest of orange.
